What we have seen trending in 2024 as a garden centre

As we move closer to 2025, lets reflect on some of the trends we saw this year. Gardening continues to flourish as a beloved hobby and a growing industry.

1. Focus on Sustainability

Consumers, especially Gen Z and Millennials, are increasingly prioritising sustainable gardening practices. This includes using eco-friendly materials, reducing plastic waste, and supporting energy-efficient greenhouses. Independent garden centers play a key role, as many shoppers prefer them for their variety and expertise.

2. Bold New Aesthetics

"Cyber lime," a vibrant neon green, set to dominate 2024 garden designs. Pairing bold, neon foliage with dark greens creates striking visual contrasts, perfect for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Additionally, "Goth gardening," which emphasises dark, mysterious blooms like deep purple tulips and dark foliage, remains a popular choice.

3. Space-Inspired Gardens

Sci-fi themes are on the rise, with gardeners incorporating alien-like plants such as lithops ("living stones"), jade vines, and dragon lilies. These unusual choices make for eye-catching displays and offer a fresh perspective on biodiversity.

4. Community Gardening Growth

Gardening’s appeal as a community activity is expanding. Whether through local garden clubs or online groups, gardeners are sharing their love for plants while emphasising the social and mental health benefits of the practice.

5. Expanded Gardening Habits

Studies show that gardeners plan to spend more time and money in 2024. Nearly 65% of surveyed gardeners aim to expand their gardens, making this the perfect time for garden centers to offer workshops, exclusive plant varieties, and sustainable products.
