About Us

Our signature dish

'Great food for any mood'

The Merry Harriers is an Award winning Freehold Free House owned by Reginald and Lesley Payne set in the beautiful Blackdown Hills, recently designated an "area of outstanding natural beauty". The new management team, Richard Watters as General Manager and Mike Griffiths, Head Chef, welcome customers old and new to come and try our new menu which changes seasonally and daily specials always available.

The Merry Harriers is situated off Junction 26 of the M5, 3 miles from Wellington and 10 minutes from Taunton, the county town of Somerset and 25 minutes from Honiton plus only 30 miles from the cathedral city of Exeter. Brown tourist signs will guide you to the pub from the A38 and the top of Ford Street.

From Taunton via Blagdon Hill, the drive to this delightfully old worlde inn could not be more pleasant. Set amidst beautiful countryside, The Merry Harriers, with its beamed ceilings, cosy inglenook, characterful bar and dining areas, offers a relaxing retreat for lunch, an evening meal or just a drink with friends.

Complementing a wide selection of fresh fish, meat, and game is a excellent choice of wines, old and new world, supplied by Regency Wine merchant of Exeter. We use local supplies where possible including West Country foods and Tim potter, butcher of Wellington. We have a large mature beer garden, and designated children’s play area to entertain the children, while you enjoy a drink and food, in the summer months.

On a historic note, the Inn dates from 1492 and stands by the side of the once infamous Forches Corner, where records show ambushes took place during the 17th Century Monmouth Rebellion and Highwaymen patrolled the roads, (some of whom were hung outside the pub). It is also said that the Pub is haunted by two ghosts - the Headless Horseman and an Old Lady - both of whom are alleged to be mischievous but friendly.

Known for Fresh Fish, local meats, Real Ales and Fine Wines, The Merry Harriers is currently listed in 'The Good Pub Guide', 'The Good Beer Guide' and the 'Which Pub Guide'.

Wherever possible, we use Local or West Country produce, which is freshly cooked to order. We will always have a number of vegetarian dishes on our daily menu.

(Please advise us in advance of any special diets, we are happy to cater for customers with gluten, wheat or dairy free diets.)
